"I love Brittany, the wildness, the primitiveness. When my wooden clogs strike this granite ground, I hear the muffled, dull, powerful tone I seek in my painting."
Letter to Shuffenecker, March 1888
In the spring of 1894, Gauguin came to Pont-Aven with Annah the Javanese. Once again, he enjoyed the warm welcome and the good food of Marie-Jeanne Gloanec, but this time in the new hotel that she had just had built in the town's main square: Hotel Gloanec.
Marie-Jeanne gave him a corner room on the first floor. Gauguin rented Kerazan Manor in order to work there with his group of artists. And he enjoyed himself ... one evening in Concarneau, accompanied by Annah and her monkey Taoa, a brawl broke out and Gauguin broke his ankle. He remained bedridden for nearly 5 months, being cared for by the inn's staff.
